European Network of Statelessness published an article, “Navigating Limbo: Rights of stateless people during the ongoing war in Ukraine”, that describes the results of the research conducted by Right to Protection, with support from HIAS. It reveals the increased challenges faced by undocumented and stateless persons in accessing their fundamental rights since the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

The article briefly describes:

  • the causes of statelessness in Ukraine;
  • the impact of the war on the spread of this phenomenon;
  • the influence of statelessness on the possibility for people affected by it to access their fundamental rights.

The article demonstrates the research results by highlighting the main difficulties faced by undocumented and stateless persons in accessing essential rights for human life such as medical care, social security, and employment. In addition, attention is drawn to the access to rights and services during martial law, the problem of receiving humanitarian aid for the specified categories of people, and their freedom of movement, particularly while escaping hostilities.

In conclusion, the piece highlights the necessary recommendations based on the research results for preventing and addressing the issues stateless people face in Ukraine.
