Right to Protection spoke about statelessness in Ukraine at an European forum

Statelesness Events (Ukraine)

Sofiia Kordonets, Head of the Assistance to Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Stateless Persons in Ukraine Programme Direction of R2P, participated in the Statelessness Awareness Forum (Europe). The event was organised by Apatride Network — the coalition of stateless people from various countries around the world. The aim was finding common solutions in this area.

This year’s event brought together international law students from various universities and representatives of NGOs from around the Europe who work in the field of statelessness or in related areas.

Right to Protection partnered with the event, and Sofiia Kordonets was the speaker at two panels. She spoke about:

  • the difficulties faced by stateless persons in Ukraine;
  • the challenges experts encounter when protecting the rights of such individuals;
  • addressing the issue of statelessness;
  • Fund’s work and experience in this field.

In addition, this year’s forum launched the first-ever award dedicated to the issue of statelessness: Statelessness Impact Award (SIA). It aims to recognise stateless persons and organisations that have made a significant and tangible contribution to advancing the rights and integration of stateless persons. Sofiia Kordonets also served as a member of the award’s jury.

“For experts from Ukraine, participation in such events is particularly valuable in the context of the full-scale war and emerging challenges related to documentation and access to rights. We have unique experience to share, and at the same time we can adopt practices that have already proven effective in other countries. Such events help not only to strengthen the expert community but also to shape a shared vision of how to move towards overcoming statelessness at a global level”.
