The Kharkiv transit centre receives people every day who have been forced to flee their homes because of the war.
There are now settlements that volunteers can no longer reach due to the constant danger. People have to evacuate on their own, risking their lives.
This is what happened to Liubov. Together with three neighbours, she walked for two days from Kupiansk. All of them are senior citizens and took only what they could carry. The journey was extremely difficult due to the threat of drone attacks, severe frost, blizzards, and deep snow.
They spent the nights in abandoned houses and asked local residents for shelter when they managed to find someone. Only when they reached the checkpoint were they evacuated to a safe place.
At the transit centre in Kharkiv, Liubov and other evacuees were registered to receive multi-purpose cash assistance from UNHCR Ukraine and were provided with other necessary support.
