The Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC2024) took place in Berlin. This year's slogan was "United in defence. United in recovery. Stronger together."
Nadiya Kovalchuk, Programme Director of Right to Protection, participated in the conference. Together with several partner organisations, a statement was made on ensuring the housing rights of internally displaced persons and the war-affected population.
"Millions of Ukrainians have lost their homes and have nowhere to go. Most of them will not be able to solve the housing issue on their own — older people, large families, single parents, people with disabilities... Sooner or later, the question may arise: should we stay in Ukraine in such circumstances? We have talked about the need to create social housing for vulnerable groups of the population. People should have decent housing and their own homes," stated Nadiya Kovalchuk.
Escalated by the ongoing war, the housing crisis presents a complex situation with multifaceted funding requirements, necessitating short-term and long-term strategies. Addressing this issue requires creating various housing solutions tailored to specific needs, capacities, and vulnerabilities, such as:
The key goal of URC2024 was to mobilise continued international support for Ukraine's recovery, reconstruction, reform, and modernisation.
Government leaders from a number of countries, representatives of international organisations, businesses, civil society, and local authorities attended the event to develop solutions to overcome the numerous challenges Ukraine faces today.
