Right to Protection presents a series of videos created as part of the UNHCR's Rental Market Initiative, which operated in October-December 2023 in 3 oblasts of Ukraine (Kyivska, Kirovohradska, Cherkaska) and enabled 209 internally displaced families to resolve their housing issues. The programme provided for reimbursement of rental costs for 6 months, aiming to support IDP families after forced displacement and facilitate their integration.
These are the stories of 3 different families displaced due to the war in Ukraine. Having fled their homes and sought refuge in other regions, these families faced housing problems. However, they found a way out by participating in the UNHCR's Rental Market Initiative. Despite their losses and hardships, each family exemplifies extraordinary resilience and love of life. They choose not to give up and to rebuild their lives in new circumstances.
Liudmyla Chychera is a displaced person from Mariupol. She was forced to move to Cherkasy when the full-scale war broke out. The woman tells her harrowing story and how participation in the UNHCR's Rental Market Initiative helped her and her son adapt to the unknown place. The new accommodation allowed the family to feel comfortable and secure again and thus to find resources for fresh work and life plans. For the first time in a long time, Liudmyla's son returned to studying offline, as the family's house is close to the school. In Cherkasy, Liudmyla continued actively developing the educational space she started in her native Mariupol. Here, they hold free sessions on IT, psychological meetings for IDPs in need, and establish Ukrainian language lessons.
Tetiana Krasnikova is a native of Kharkivska oblast. When the full-scale war started, she and her two children were forced to move to Cherkasy. This video tells the story of a family adapting to the new place and living despite all the challenges and difficulties. Participation in the UNHCR's Rental Market Initiative helped Tetiana's family finally feel safe and secure at home: the children went to a local school and made friends, and Tetiana continued her volunteer work and planned to open a small sewing studio in Cherkasy.
Valentyna Bobko is from Khersonska oblast. The full-scale war forced the mother of many children to leave her home and seek refuge in Kyivska oblast. At first, the family lived in a dormitory, then in a modular town. Thanks to participation in the UNHCR's Rental Market Initiative, the family could feel comfort and peace of mind and integrate into the local school. Valentyna started looking for a job and began her life from scratch. It is a story about finding solutions, mutual support and the desire to move on despite the war.

Comfortable housing is an essential factor for the successful integration of internally displaced people in a new place. With the support of the United Nations Refugee Agency, we have provided the programme participants with housing for 6 months. Such programmes work for the long term, allowing people to devote their time to the integration process: finding activities that will provide economic stability and the opportunity to evolve and contribute to developing their new hromada. And most importantly, it gives you a sense of a stable and comfortable home, usually lacking during displacement.
