More than three years of war in Ukraine have deepened the vulnerability of those in the most fragile circumstances. Many older people were forced to leave their homes or remain in the frontline communities, grieving lost loved ones, isolated due to limited mobility, and bearing the psychological burdens of conflict. The social protection system is stretched to its limits, and the need for help grows every day.
This already dire situation is being pushed to the brink by Russia’s relentless attacks, carried out in the dead of winter, plunging all of Ukraine into darkness. Nationwide blackouts leave millions without heat, water, and electricity. And when power goes out, thousands of older people in Ukraine are also left to endure prolonged blackouts without heat or electricity. Many are isolated in cold homes they cannot leave, cut off from family, neighbors, and basic services. For those who have lost loved ones or been forced to leave their homes because of war, the cold deepens feelings of loneliness and abandonment. Your support at this moment is a sign of human solidarity and a reminder that even in the darkest hours, they are not forgotten.
In response to this challenge, R2P started the Right to Dignity campaign on the GlobalGiving platform.
Support us on GlobalGivingOur social workers provide regular home care visits to older people in the frontline and the war-affected communities:
More than 2,600 vulnerable older people have already received social services thanks to our partners, such as USAID, UHF, and others. But the real need is much bigger.
War has not only caused physical destruction but also created new challenges for social protection. Many seniors face multiple vulnerabilities, including displacement, isolation, and deteriorating health. Our project is not a one-time intervention but an ongoing support system that helps every person maintain their dignity, safety, and human connection during these difficult times.
For many older people, a social worker’s visit during prolonged blackouts may be the only human contact they have, a hot meal or simple reassurance that someone is there. As darkness and cold stretch on, our work helps ensure that power outages do not turn into complete silence and loneliness for those who are most vulnerable.
