Right to Protection’s Experts Spoke about the Peculiarities of International Protection during Trainings for Border Guards

November 4, 2024

Right to Protection’s experts took part in training sessions for employees of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine on preventing human trafficking and responding to detected cases, which covered not only human trafficking but also a number of other issues, including access to international protection. The UN Refugee Agency and the International Organization for Migration organised the events. R2P’s specialists participated as invited experts and informed the attendees about access to international protection.

The training took place in September and October this year in Chernivtsi, Lviv, Lutsk, and Mohyliv-Podilskyi (Vinnytska oblast).

Experts in the field of assistance to refugees and asylum seekers held hour-long sessions, during which they spoke in detail about refugees and asylum seekers in Ukraine, the procedure for applying for and receiving protection from third-country nationals, the possibility of referrals, etc.

According to Sofiia Kordonets, Head of the Assistance to Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Stateless Persons programme direction at R2P, such training sessions are essential for border guards. After all, refugees and asylum seekers can often turn to them for help.

Sofiia Kordonets, Head of the Assistance to Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Stateless Persons programme direction at R2P:

"Often, the first people refugees and asylum seekers can turn to for help are the  State Border Guard Service employees. That is why it is crucial that during such appeals, officials know well who they are dealing with and how to act in such situations to maximise the protection of the rights of these people. Our priority goal during such training sessions was also to emphasise the importance of incorporating European human rights standards into the work of officials.”
