Sofiia Kordonets, Head of the Assistance to Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Stateless Persons in Ukraine programme direction of R2P, participated in the second Statelessness Awareness Forum (Europe) organised by Apatride Network. The event took place on 20–23 March in Budapest, Hungary.
The forum aimed to raise awareness of statelessness, the challenges stateless persons face, their rights, the different contexts of statelessness, and the exchange of experiences to address this issue.
R2P was also a co-organiser of the event, and the expert from the Fund had the opportunity to speak about stateless people and the challenges they faced during the war in Ukraine.
Students and postgraduates interested in and writing research papers on statelessness, as well as lawyers and NGO staff from different European countries who work with stateless persons, including those from Ukraine, attended the forum.
During the event, the participants discussed child statelessness, challenges, and problems in the area of access to citizenship, etc. They discussed the realities of the lives of stateless people, and listened to their experiences and the social, political and legal challenges they face.
Sofiia Kordonets, Head of the Assistance to Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Stateless Persons in Ukraine programme direction of R2P, spoke at two event panels. She talked about the impact of the war on statelessness in Ukraine and focused on the peculiarities of registering the birth of children born in temporarily occupied territories. Sofiia Kordonets also spoke at the panel about the problems faced by children whose births were not registered in time and, therefore, cannot confirm their Ukrainian citizenship.
Sofiia Kordonets, Head of the Assistance to Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Stateless Persons in Ukraine programme direction of R2P:
"I am extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to participate in an event of this level. It is important to draw attention to the problems of statelessness, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. I focused on critical aspects, particularly when registering the births of children in the temporarily occupied territories, as this can lead to statelessness in the future. My goal was to help the European community better understand the difficulties faced by stateless people in Ukraine during the war."
