A Participant's Journey: Inside the Right to Business Training Course

March 28, 2024

This is Anna Kurdova, an entrepreneur from Odesa and a participant in the Right to Business training course. She moved from a small town in Kharkivska oblast at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Before that, she lived between two cities and was in Odesa on 24 February. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, she left the city but returned a few months later to develop her delicious business.

"Before the invasion, my husband and I had a restaurant where he worked as a chef, and I worked as a waitress. Over time, I grew to become a consultant director for opening establishments. Now, our family business consists of meat snacks, sun-dried tomatoes, and Djerki dog treats. We have been saving money to expand our small production and buy equipment. Slowly, we worked out recipes and ideas. We distributed the products through friends, and then the first orders came."

Until February 2022, Anna's business operated in tiny volumes, literally "for her own". After the full-scale invasion began, it stopped working, as all the equipment remained in Odesa. However, when Anna returned, she immediately resumed her favourite business: improving the product, changing the branding, and volunteering.

"I learned about the Right to Business training course through a telegram channel. I filled out the questionnaire and successfully... forgot about it. Then I got a call saying I had been selected for the course. I was stunned. It was a little euphoria and a leap forward. The course is very cool. Some things I knew before, and others I am learning from scratch. For example, I liked the lecture on finance. Even though it lasted a whole day and the topic was complicated, it flew by quickly. I will definitely apply all this knowledge in my business because I used to do many things intuitively before. This training gives me many tools and opportunities."

The entrepreneur is currently working on a new product for her business — dog treats. She is also preparing to buy larger equipment to take Djerki to the next level. We wish Anna success and inspiration!

The course was organised by R2P as a partner of the Ukraine Response Consortium within the Response Consortium: Providing Multidisciplinary Humanitarian Assistance to the War-Affected Population in Ukraine (2023–2024) project. The programme is funded by the USAID Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).
