Not Alone on the Front Line: Mykola’s Story of Care and Compassion

85-year-old Mykola has lived his entire life in Donetska oblast. Today, his hometown is on the front line and faces daily challenges.

With age, the man’s health began to deteriorate rapidly: chronic illnesses, weakness, limited mobility, and living alone made everyday life almost unbearable. Even cleaning the flat, buying groceries or medicines, and cooking became difficult and exhausting tasks.

At the most difficult moment, he was taken care of by someone he did not expect such care from — his ex-wife. Despite not having been together for a long time, she could not stay away from his problems and turned to Right to Protection’s specialists.

The Fund’s social workers responded promptly, and the man began receiving home care services, including assistance with various household matters. Specialists organised comprehensive support for Mykola:

• regular visits by social workers;
• assistance with cleaning and maintaining hygiene in the home;
• delivery of food and medicines;
• assistance and monitoring of medication intake;
• accompaniment to medical examinations if necessary.

Thanks to R2P’s assistance, Mykola’s life has improved significantly, and he is not left alone with his problems. Daily challenges are no longer a struggle for him.

This story illustrates how human compassion and cooperation can radically change a person’s life, even in a frontline region.
