R2P's Representatives Participated in the OSCE Human Dimension Conference

25 квітня 2024

On 22–23 April, a two-day OSCE Human Dimension Conference on the Role of Civil Society in Promoting and Protecting International Human Rights Standards and International Humanitarian Law was held in Vienna.

Representatives of OSCE participating States, intergovernmental organisations, civil society, and charitable organisations, including Right to Protection, attended the event. Nadiya Kovalchuk, Programme Director, and Ksenia Gedz, Advocacy Coordinator, represented the Foundation at the conference.

In her speech, Ksenia Gedz emphasised the need to ensure an effective system of monitoring human rights at international checkpoints, to ensure the priority passage of persons with disabilities across the border, to ensure transparency and fairness of the decision-making procedure for crossing the border and to bring to justice for human rights violations at international borders.

Ksenia Gedz, Advocacy Coordinator of R2P

According to the UNHCR, since 24 February 2022, there have been about 30 million border crossings from Ukraine. Most of those crossing the Ukrainian border are women with children, vulnerable groups, people with disabilities and older people. Right to Protection, as an implementing partner of UNHCR, monitors the observance of the rights and humane conditions of border crossings by Ukrainian citizens seeking protection abroad. However, the conditions for such monitoring are severely limited. In this regard, we call on OSCE member states and international organisations to promote the creation of an effective system of monitoring at international checkpoints for the observance of human rights and to prevent unfair or discriminatory treatment of people in the exercise of their powers by the border guard service.

We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this conference and speak about the urgent problems of the war-affected population of Ukraine at the international level to ensure that their rights and freedoms are respected.
